Happy Birthday, H.

H had a fun birthday!
Much to do today and A's home with a cold, so I'll put up more pictures tomorrow.
For now, enjoy these!

Night time musings from a kindergartner

Mom, I know the rules. You have to be quiet and whisper to your neighbors.

Mom, I know the kindergarten secret dino wave. (Waves 1 finger). All the kindergartners know how.

Mom, I told my friend that in Star Wars Han Solo gets frozen in Carbonite.
(me): what did he say?
H: Nothing, he just looked at me like this. (A funny blank stare.)

Mom, Andrew cried for his mama today.

Mom, I know how to say hello in lots of different languages, like bonjour, hola, and stuff.

Mom, what language do they speak in England?
(me): English
H: Oh good, I can understand them then.

Mom, I missed you while I was at school today.

Sniff.

First day of school update

A: Two thumbs up, but misses her friends at her old school.

H: When I asked what was his favorite part about the day he replied, "Everything!"

Light in August

Nothing marks the passage of time like the start of a new school year.
Especially this year!
"Kindergarten, here I come!" H said in the car. He was all smiles.
A. was excited to go to her new school as well. At her school, the teachers like a "quick" drop-off to decrease the drama and it worked well. All the kids were busy in an activity when we got there, not a single one was crying. A good sign!

About the...um, hair situation. You can see it in the 3rd picture down when he's at his seat. It's that little bald spot on the front right. It's hardly noticeable and doesn't look that bad at all, especially if you swish his hair around. The longer hair on top helps, so I'm waiting a week or two to let those ultra short ends underneath grow out a bit.

What am I going to do now? Well, I had my own first day of school last night and have Calculus I and Physics homework to do....uninterrupted. Yea. (Blow your party horns now.) Including these classes I will have completed 34 hours of math/science and need only 5 more classes until I'm all set to apply to pharmacy school. Will it happen? I don't know. You never know! But I hope so. I've been volunteering in a hospital pharmacy department for awhile now and like it. I'll continue to do that on Friday mornings. I'm now auditing anesthesiologists' narcotic records for the department (making sure that all the drug amounts add up to see if there are any "missing" doses).
I hope to move into a "PRN" (as needed) paid position at some point in the not so distant future. Bringin' home some bacon sounds nice after 6 years!

Enjoy these pictures. I think that they are going to have a fun day. They'll have a hot chocolate chip cookie (NYT recipe...the yummiest) and a cold glass of milk waiting for them.

Of course. Rite of passage I suppose.

4:33 pm today.

4 days until kindergarten.

H is at my feet in the kitchen cutting paper when I hear it.

"Ha-ha! I cut my own hair!"

I look down when I see baby fine hair fluttering to the floor.

He REALLY looks like his Dad now.

Joking. It's not so bad. He took a good chunk out, but fixable. At least he didn't get a hold of his sister's hair.

the Thursday buzz

It's meet the teacher night for kindergartner H!
He is most excited about the T-shirts and pizza that will be on sale this evening.
Little A. will be hitting the KG scene next year, so she's happy to check it all out as well.

5 days until school starts!

Saturn V (Part 3 of 3)

We had another reason to visit the Space Center. R. was involved in some of the preservation work for the Saturn V project.
The first picture shows R. talking to H. about what he did. (He was responsible for where the command module(brown thing) meets the service module (gray thing).
I tried to get a good picture of the wall piece discussing the restoration, but the tram was leaving in 90 seconds, so I had to be quick.

Houston Space Center (Part 2 of 3)

H is crazy about Star Wars these days. The Space Center had a George Lucas exhibit (Indiana Jones, Star Wars, etc.), so this excursion was a dream come true for the boy. Little A. enjoyed it, but was a bit worn out from the day before.
H had the best time checking out some of the simulators the center had available, such as in the last picture of him in a "MMU trainer".

Our fantastic weekend. (Part 1 of 3)

We left yesterday morning to take a few things to a dear cousin of mine. After visiting her a bit, we went to the coast for a swim and then to a boardwalk with rides for the kids. After a good night's rest, we managed to be the first ones in line today for fun at the Houston Space Center (NASA) before heading home.

Swim lessons...for real.

Confused by that last post? It was Martin Short and some hairy dude in a famous 'synchronized swimming' SNL skit. Makes me laugh. Every time. (Insert my husband's eyeroll here.)

Here's H being the "lifeguard" to save the teacher. (He's a lifeguard, who helps people. Who need help. In the watah. ----Elmo'sWorld reference. )

The last picture is of the kids getting ready to splash down to the teacher and swim to the other side (one at a time). The little red belts the kids wore were great. Just enough support to keep them afloat. At various times, she'd have the kids take them off to practice floating, swim two strokes to the side of the pool, etc. We were quite pleased with the program and will definitely do this again next year.
