My little Picasso

Aubin's drawing of a happy Octopus.

Funny Aubin story of the day:
This morning, I wouldn't give her something she wanted. So, she sat on the couch, cried, and yelled out "I want my daddy. My daddy will make me feel better!"

I'll do a Hayden-centric post before too long.

Mere child's play

Today called out for activities like bubble blowin' , bike ridin', and of course hopscotch. By 11:30 am, it was so blasted hot! So I loaded up the kids and took them to Chick-Fila. And apparently, so did every other mom in our city! It was a nuthouse. The indoor playscape was packed with greasy-fingered-under-5'ers. I shied away from the fake jeweled sandal wearing moms and scoped out a spot by the one reading a newspaper. I made a crack that I benchmark my children's development by how far I can get in a newspaper. (Newborns: you save Monday's paper until Wednesday before giving up you'll ever read a darn thing again. Toddlers: Front page headlines of the daily paper Pre-K: Living large by finishing your first article.) She actually chuckled at this instead of the glazed stare I normally get from random mom interactions so I knew I found a new 15 minute friend. Actually, she turned out to be a 5 minute friend before I hear Aubin screaming/sobbing and both kids saying "You're a BABY! No, YOU'RE a baby! You're a bad kid! I'm sending YOU to BABY SCHOOL!" ...When you hear that kind of a kiddie curse, you better high tail it up those tubes before bad things go down. So yes, I made my way up the playscape and let me tell you something. I prayed all the way up. "Dear Lord, please. PLEASE let this be soap residue that a worker forgot to wash off." Anyway, we all made it out alive and as I left the play area, I noticed my friend hadn't even turned the page. ( :

"School's out for the summer..."

This picture was so fun to take! I was playing around with the macro function of my camera and was able to catch this bee picking up pollen from a prickly pear cactus and taking off.
It was tricky to focus on such a small subject! I wish I could attribute it to my emerging photography skills, but I just got lucky.

It's amazing to think all of what you see is actually on a roof top of a building in downtown Austin. Whole Foods headquarters is an amazing place! We usually go on Friday mornings. We almost always have the place to ourselves for at least a little bit.

In other news, Hayden and Aubin finished up pre-school for the year on Thursday. Although it's only been one day, he's already talking about his friend Hannah. I call her "tall tale Hannah". She had told him that popcorn was really a bunch of eggs with baby birds inside and that lady bugs don't like boys. Hayden was busy sorting all of that out with mom's help this morning.

Hayden will have the same teacher next year and Aubin will have our neighbor's sister for her teacher. They are excited about going back in the fall, but ready for their summer activities! We've signed them up for gymnastics classes starting June 4th. I think they'll enjoy it. Of course they can't WAIT for the pools to open. We have wonderful pool facilities here with "zero entry" (beach style) for the young children. Perfect for us.

"When you're sliding into first......."

If the title of this posting is a bit confusing to you, I recommend you rent "Parenthood" with Steve Martin and watch the first scene.
Hayden came home from preschool with a "watch this"! and gave me the look like "isn't this the COOLEST boy-sound EVER?!" (....my baby is now officially a boy.......sniff.) He then proceeded to teach Aubin how to do it. That sound + hysterical laughter is all I heard until bedtime. ( :

Earning their keep.

Do you want to know how to keep kids busy on a 98 degree day? Give them a bowl of water, a medicine syringe and ask them to water the plants! They love it and it takes forever. Stay-at-home tip of the day.

You're welcome.

Ear infection

Poor little Hayden has an ear infection. I hope the antibiotics work soon. He's hurting tonight, but hopefully he'll be better soon.

Funny things I let the kids do.

Hayden has done this for a year now. He grabs the garage door when it opens and rides it up. Aubin screams "No, Hay-non! No, Hay-non!"

Big wheel time means "fly-on-the-broken-computer-chair time" for Aubin. Actually, it looks like a lot of fun....although rather strange. I was going to try it myself, but I learned my lesson on the slip and slide. ( :

Have a nice day!
